Software Developer
Mrs. Maury worked on NASA contracts during and right after college, then attended graduate school in poetry and switched to freelance writing. While working for a magazine, she started programming again. Then she moved into technical writing and editing, and finally went back to computer programming, earning an MS in engineering and computer science. While in graduate school, she endured many, many professors who hated providing disability accommodations; and she encountered the same when she taught college as an adjunct. In grad school at Hopkins, she began to advocate for disabled students as a means to survive her own classes, finally realizes that while academia has few true disability advocates, the Maryland State Legislature has many.
She worked with other disabled students in higher education to organize meetings with politicians, culminating in a meeting with Governor Moore’s cabinet members and a bill to require mandatory ADA training for all instructors at Maryland State Schools. The bill died in committee, but elected officials indicate they are willing to try again.
